We're on a downhill ride now. There may be a few snowfalls and possibly another March storm, because anything can happen in Ontario at this time of year. In the final analysis we should have more thaws than snows, and some very windy days, but by the end of March everybody will be trying out spring jackets and muttering about how cold it is. I can feel the difference in the air now, it's starting to feel like spring. Our daylight is starting earlier and lasting longer, although we switch the clocks forward this weekend, and our mornings will be dark again.
spent a happy afternoon switching from snowmen to owls. It was a little tricky this year because we had to be sure to put the heavier owls on the bottom row so Huck and Tugby didn't send anyone sailing to the landing below. Although I have been collecting owls since I was a teenager, the snowmen have tended to take over and it is quite the chore to round up all the strays and be sure they get packed away. We always find a few stragglers lurking in the basement or dining room, hoping to avoid capture. This January we
finally broke down and bought Rubbermaid totes to store my snowmen in.
Previous years we had used miscellaneous boxes, which took up far more
room in our very small storage area. We had 15 boxes which could be
recycled by the end of the day, which felt wonderful. Here is a picture of Hooty McOwl. Our younger son bought him for me for Christmas over 10 years ago. He
smuggled Hooty into the house under the pretext he had bought me a pet rat, and managed to keep the deception going until I had a chance to unwrap my gift. In the winter, Hooty wears a seasonal hat and becomes an honorary snowman since he is too big and beautiful to hide away. I think he is the star of both collections, and I suspect he does too. He certainly has the attitude.
