I'm Having A Heat Wave

Actually, the heatwave is occurring at night.  As mentioned in other blogs, my night time thermostat is set a little higher than I'd like.  It's still too cold at night for me to justify opening a window, or turning the ceiling fan on, but I'm having trouble staying asleep.

Actually, its not entirely my fault.  I cannot sleep under our feather duvet any more, because I overheat.  As a result, we've been using an ordinary blanket tucked into our duvet cover, and if necessary supplementing with my home made quilt.  Now the quilt was planned to be less than queen sized, because it was never supposed to end up in our bedroom, but it looked so good (and I was so proud) that's where it is.   As a general rule it works very well, except it's a little small for two people.

The other day, I was shopping at Costco and came across an Australian wool duvet that was an amazing price, and supposed to be breathable and for year round use.  I couldn't resist trying it, so it's on the bed at the moment and the blanket has been retired.  Last night was the first time we slept under it, and over all I think it worked well.  It was warmer than using just the blanket and duvet cover, but I didn't over heat either.

So what was the problem?  Yup, that would be my Huck cat.  Apparently he's learned how to climb between the duvet and the sheet, and he loves to snuggle right in against my body.  Talk about a small heat-generating plant!!  I woke up several times in the night, gently removed him from his spot, and placed him on the outside of the covers.  As soon as I went back to sleep, Huck crept back under the duvet and made himself comfortable.  The battle raged all night, from what I recall.  Tugby also went through a stage where he wanted to sleep very close to us, but he seems to have matured a bit and now is happily exploring sofas and chairs throughout the house.  Please don't tell me that all I have to do is close my door.  I don't want to lock myself in my room and let the cats roam free.  We don't have a door that we can use to shut the cats in the basement, so I guess we'll hope that Huck outgrows this clingy stage quickly.

In the meantime, the jury is still out on the Australian wool duvet.  I hope it works, because my husband is quite often cold at night while I am not.  I feel like I'm stuck in the Goldilocks story, this bed is too hot, this bed is too cold, and we can't find a solution that is just right.
