Spring is Coming

Welcome to my world

After spending far too long fighting the inevitable, I have been colouring my hair shades of purple for several years, because life is far too short to spend being nondescript gray!  Why purple?  Because it makes me smile every time I see my reflection!  I have chosen to be happy and to reflect this attitude to people around me.

My hair colour is a small act of rebellion against the stereotype of middle age.  Many women tell me how much they love the colour, tell me how brave I am and say “I wish I was brave enough to do that, but …”  I think the secret is that I don’t take myself too seriously.  Hair will always grow out.  Purple is truly just an attitude.

I love to read, engage in the occasional knitting or needlepoint blitz and am learning to appreciate and enjoy my empty nest.

What kind of books do I like to read??  Basically I like to be swept into an alternate reality, with a strong female lead character.   I do read some fantasy and science fiction, but I also enjoy cozies and traditional mysteries.  I also read history, both fiction and non-fiction.  Once I find an author I enjoy, I tend to become a little obsessive and will attempt to read everything they write.  Thus, I followed Charlaine Harris when she wrote Aurora Teagarden, then Lily Bard, and have happily read all the Sookie Stackhouse and Harper Conolly novels.  I enjoy Laura Lippman, Sarah Paretsky, Sue Grafton, Kim Harrison, Kelley Armstrong, Philippa Gregory, Antonia Fraser.  I have been known to dabbble in true crime, although after reading these for many years, I have scared myself off the topic for a while.   There are so many genres and sub gentres in the publishing world now that it is difficult to define exactly what I enjoy.  Although the partial list I've just shared with you would appear to be only female authors, I am not prejudiced and enjoy reading many male authors, they just aren't coming to mind at the moment.  Well, the exception to that rule would be Terry Pratchett, who is one of my favourite authors in the whole world, and who deserves an entire blog to himself.

One of the reasons I am starting this blog is so that I can share what I'm reading.  I spend a lot of time on author's blogsites, also publishing and review sites.  As the publishing world fragments it becomes more difficult to find what is available to read in any particular format.  I own a Kobo ereader and enjoy reading it, but there are so many self published and unedited authors that I have been disappointed over the quality of books that are available, and I have not been able to locate a source that will let me evaluate the product before I purchase.

As time passes, I am hoping that people will share their reading choices with me.  I always enjoy learning what other people read and am willing to try anything.
